Abbaye de Fontevraud

Fontevraud Abbey

Domaine du Golf - Saumur (49)

Located in the Loire Valley, near Saumur, come and discover the Abbey of Fontevraud, the largest royal city in Europe preserved in its original state. Founded at the beginning of the 12th century, this abbey, a few kilometres from the Domaine du Golf de Saumur, is striking for its size and originality.

Beloved by kings, it welcomed many nobles of royal blood for seven centuries on the borders of the provinces of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, before the Revolution drove out all the monks and nuns. Transformed into a prison by Napoleon in 1804, Fontevraud was saved from destruction and became a dreaded prison in Touraine until 1963. The recumbent figures of Eleanor of Aquitaine, her husband Henry II Plantagenet and their son Richard the Lionheart, on display in the abbey church, recall the glorious royal past of the place.
