Family holidays at the Bioparc - Zoo de Doué la Fontaine

Domaine du Golf - Saumur (49)

Introduction:

The Bioparc-Zoo of Doué-la-Fontaine, located near the Loire Valley in France, is a unique zoological park because of its troglodyte implantation. Set in ancient falun quarries, a typical rock of the area, the park offers a two-level visiting experience, organized around different animal spaces. Inaugurated on July 14, 1961, the Bioparc began with a small number of animals, including a young lioness named Asma. Over time, the park expanded and acquired new plots, while respecting the integrity of the site.

The evolution of the park:

The park underwent significant evolution, particularly after Pierre Gay, the founder’s son, became involved in the 1970s. Pierre Gay redefined the park’s mission, focusing less on the number of species and more on space and animal welfare. Following a visit to Gerald Durell’s zoo in Jersey, Pierre Gay also decided to dedicate himself to the conservation of endangered species. This vision transformed the Bioparc into a leader in the conservation of species in captivity.

The park today:

Today, the Bioparc is known for its contribution to the ex-situ conservation of endangered species and for its “Nature Projects”, which support conservation initiatives around the world. The park, which officially took the name of Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine in 2011 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, is one of the busiest tourist sites in Maine-et-Loire, attracting more than 200,000 visitors a year.

Practical information:

In practical terms, the Bioparc is open every day from February 4 to November 12, with varied schedules depending on the season. Rates also vary, with different prices for adults, children and annual subscriptions. The park offers various services such as picnic areas, parking, a restaurant, and a shop. It is also accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The unique Bioparc experience:

Visiting the Bioparc offers a unique immersive experience, where animals live in wide spaces, in a natural setting and without dressage for shows. The park focuses on the spectacle of nature itself, offering visitors a chance to see the animals behave naturally in their habitats.
